We visited the Hinkle-Garton Farmstead as part of a state-wide event, Indiana Maple Syrup Weekend. (Kudos to Visit Bloomington for posting this event on their calendar.) Despite the coronavirus epidemic, we feel it is important it is to engage and support the local tourism industry.
We thoroughly enjoyed a demonstration of how to harvest and process your own maple syrup. I was very impressed with the fact they repurposed an old metal filing cabinet into a processor that allowed them to cook the maple sap into the finished product.
Our host explained how Bloomington Restorations plays a role in preserving local history. After the demonstration, we explored the first floor of the 1892 homestead. We were thrilled to meet an archeologist who educated us about the history of the farm and its’ owner.
